Swaziland, Natal and Zululand - South Africa

More rhino than you can shake a stick at!

Walking tall in Itala.
Royal Africa’s Big Game (itinerary & prices)

Once the hunting preserve of the Zulu kings, Zululand is a key to viewing Africa’s big game - rhino, elephant and lion - at a value price. The floodplain of the Usutu river is a superb habitat for hippo and crocodile, and the richest diversity of bird life anywhere south of the equator - over 400 species recorded.

Swaziland & Zululand

Begin with spectacular scenery in Swaziland - high mountains in the west and savannah in the east. Once in Zululand, at Mkuze the hides like Kumasinga provide some of the finest wildlife photography in Africa, with an array of wildebeest, nyala, rhino, giraffe impala and warthog at close quarters.

White Elephant Lodge and Mkuze Falls

Our first encounter with rhino and elephant is at the private White Elephant Reserve, overlooked by the spectacular escarpment of the Lubombo Mountains. Learning about elephants here is quite fascinating. Mkuze Falls Lodge is in the rising the Hill country and features the 'big five' in a superb private setting.

Itala Mountain ReserveHippo at the end of a long day! Ndumo

In the primaeval mountain landscape Itala Game Reserve herds of rhino are common, an exciting phenomenon in today's Africa. There are also wildebeest, large numbers of giraffe, zebra, eland, hartebeest, kudu and impala as well as elephant.

Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift

The upland heart of the Zulu nation saw the drama of the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, with the two famous sites of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift. For anyone interested in Southern Africa, a visit with expert guides is a deeply moving experience.
