The Cape of Good Hope is the Mediterranean of the southern
Hemisphere - balmy weather, blue seas, fine wines and spectacular
scenery. The plant life is profuse, and many
of our cultivated flowers originated there like Gladiolus,
Freesia, Agapanthus, Mesembryanthemum, Erica and Pelargonium.
Others, such as the rare proteas and leucodenrons, are found
only in the Cape.
Wine routes and Cape Dutch homesteads
The Cape has enjoyed 400 years of historical development
and is famous for its wineries, Cape Dutch homesteads with
collections of art and exquisite furniture made from Cape
woods like yellow wood. We visit some of the 17th and 18th
century homes and gardens to savour this rich heritage.
Take a glass of Constantia
We visit Groot Constantia, a manor house with the oldest
vineyards in the southern hemisphere. Jane Austen mentions
it is 'Sense & Sensibility' (1797). And there is a full-day
excursion around the Cape Peninsula with spectacular views
of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Namaqua flowers in August & September
Also visit Clanwilliam in the western Cape, with the greatest
profusion of the Cape spring flora, the ground carpeted with
colour. Visits will also be made to historical towns like
Paarl and the old Huguenot settlement of Franshoek.
